As mentioned on the front page, Makenai has not been commissioned by a production house. It has been devised and is currently being produced by two freelance animators and a small handful of additional helpers. The ultimate aim is to obtain studio backing, but until that day it remains the project of a small team who aim for it to be something greater.
Caitlin is a 16-year-old girl who was orphaned at a young age, her only memento of her family being a pendant that looks reminiscent of an army dog-tag. Little does she know that this pendant had always been intended for a greater purpose and is highly sought after by the evil Goddess Dimante. While fleeing for her life from Dimante's horde of Kami (personified elements and items), Caitlin accidentally unlocks three slumbering Guardians who are sworn to protect humanity, together they attempt to put an end to the continuing threat of this malicious divine being and restore peace to the universe once again.
Millenniums ago an ancient war broke out among the Divine beings of the universe, started by the jealously of the Goddess Dimante. Turning against her fellow friends, Ametheya, Sapphire and Peridot, as well as the other Gods and Goddesses of the time, Dimante swore to eternally destroy everything they held dear. Still caring deeply for their friend Dimante, the Goddesses and their kind refused to put an end to the rogue Goddess, and so centuries passed where nothing was resolved. Eventually, all of their kind were destroyed with the exception of Ametheya, Sapphire and Peridot, who made a stand and devised a plan to use their Guardians, emotionally detached from Dimante, to do what they could not. The Guardians were sealed away until their minds matured enough to withstand Dimante's psychic manipulation, but unfortunately Dimante caught wind and attempted to foil the plan. The result was a last minute alteration as Peridot, the Goddess of Earth, sacrificed herself to hinder the Evil Goddess, but even her efforts were in vain.
Ten years later it becomes apparent that Caitlin was that change in tactics, given this pendant as a child she was unknowingly entrusted with hiding the key to the Guardian's revival until the time is right. When Dimante finally finds the pendant and confronts Caitlin she inadvertedly triggers this process and Caitlin awakens the Guardians to finish what the Goddesses set out to do.
Moving in with Caitlin for extra protection, the guardians Hikarino, Mizuno and Kano constantly try to thwart Dimante's own plan, whilst protecting Caitlin and her friends from harm. Harnessing their evolved powers, the Guardians must defeat and return the Kami back to their original state and hunt down Dimante before she returns to full strength after her confrontation over a decade ago. Will the Guardians succeed? is there more to the fabled pendant that awakened them? All our heroes know is that the fate of humanity is in their hands and no matter what they cannot lose - Makenai!
